Statistics on traffic crashes and the time of day

On Behalf of | Oct 30, 2021 | Motor Vehicle Accidents |

From distracted driving to drivers who get behind the wheel while drunk or excessively tired and in bad weather, you need to watch out for many hazards on the road. It is also helpful to go over statistics on motor vehicle collisions that occur at different times of the day. If you drive at certain times, the chances of becoming involved in a traffic accident are likely higher.

Although these statistics shed light on times when drivers should remain especially cautious, it is critical to remember that collisions can happen at any time of the day (or night).

Data on traffic crashes at different times

According to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, more than 34,000 deadly traffic crashes took place over the course of 2019. Among these accidents, more occurred between 6 PM and 9 PM (16.9%) than any other time, followed by 3 PM and 6 PM (15.7%). Fewer deadly traffic accidents occurred between 3 AM and 6 AM than other times.

Even though more deadly accidents occur during the evening than late at night and in the early morning, driving during these times is often very dangerous. For example, drivers are often very tired at these times.

Other statistics on traffic crashes

The BTS reports that more deadly traffic crashes took place on Saturday than other days of the week in 2019. Moreover, 47.3% of accidents happened during daylight and 81.9% took place during normal atmospheric conditions. Some people feel safer driving during the day when weather conditions are good, but these statistics point out that motor vehicle accidents can occur at any time.
