Safety advisories suggest people stay indoors when possible in such weather conditions. But what about the people who have no choice but to go out in bad weather?
Understand the dangers of winter driving
The United States Department of Transportation discusses ways drivers can stay safe in winter traffic. First, note the tremendous danger that ice and snow in particular bring about. The DOT mentions that 110,000 people end up injured every year due to crashes caused by sleet, ice or snow.
On top of that, up to 17 percent of all crashes occur in this type of weather. Thus, drivers should know to expect increased risks and heightened dangers when they hit the road.
Preparing before heading out
Preparations serve as a crucial part of driver safety in these situations. Before ever hitting the road, make sure to prepare a vehicle first. Check the transmission and battery before setting out, as cold weather can wreak havoc on these things.
Pay attention to tire condition, too. Try to switch to snow tires when possible, or use tire chains. Be sure to clear any snow from the roof, headlights, tail lights, hood and all windows before setting out.
Once on the road, keep a large distance between other vehicles. Drive at a slower speed than those posted, too. After all, speed limits represent optimal conditions.
