What drivers should do after an accident

On Behalf of | Jan 22, 2019 | Motor Vehicle Accidents |

A motor vehicle accident could cause property damage as well as bodily injury. In Virginia, an individual is required to stop at the scene of an accident. If an individual gets into an accident with property that is unattended, he or she must either locate the owner or leave a note. The note must contain the contact information for the driver who caused the accident as well as the time of the accident. The police will need to be notified in such a scenario.

Calling the police is also a good idea if a collision occurs and the driver or owner of the other vehicle is present. In cases where damage exceeds $1,500, authorities will send a report to the DMV. If the wreck occurs on a roadway, drivers make an effort to get as far off of the road as possible and then check on other drivers or passengers. However, individuals should not attempt to move an accident victim unless that victim is in immediate danger.

Medical professionals may also be qualified to offer assistance after a motor vehicle crash. If possible, those involved should try to get the contact information of anyone who witnessed the collision. Drivers in the accident should exchange contact information with each other. They should also exchange license plate and insurance policy numbers prior to leaving the scene of the incident.

If negligence causes an accident to occur, the negligent party or parties could be liable for damages incurred. Authorities may come to a preliminary conclusion as to who may be liable for an accident at the scene of the crash. Any report a police officer creates may be used as evidence in a personal injury case. Witness testimony might also be used as evidence of negligence during settlement talks or a trial.
