Why tragic motor vehicle accidents occur

Both drivers and poor roads may contribute to traffic deaths in Virginia and throughout the country. Drivers may try to operate motor vehicles after consuming alcohol or other substances that can impair their ability to do so. These substances may make it harder to react to what is happening on the road in a timely manner. In addition to driving while impaired by drugs or alcohol, individuals drive when they are too tired.

Roads themselves can be designed with tight corners or without adequate shoulders. Although those who design roads make every effort to do so in a safe manner, local geography may place limitations on safety. Even if a road is designed properly, rain, ice and snow may make them hazardous to operate on. This can be true even if a car has modern safety features.

Drivers may put themselves and others at risk by failing to focus on the road while their vehicles are moving. Distractions can occur by eating a meal while driving or talking to another passenger. Letting the mind wander while driving can also be considered a distraction. Road rage or otherwise reacting to another person's actions in an emotional way can increase the odds of a car accident taking place.

The families of those who are killed in motor vehicle accidents involving a negligent driver might be entitled to compensation. This may be decided either through a negotiated settlement or a jury decision. In either scenario, the victim's family may benefit from working with an attorney. An attorney may review a case to determine if negligence played a role in its occurrence. From there, it might be possible to use that evidence during settlement talks or a formal trial.
